MAIN CITIES

CAMPOBASSO THE CAPITAL

the province of Campobasso and does pass through the towns mentioned, as well as Guglionesi and Termoli. S.Felice del Molise, Montemitro and Acquaviva Collecroce are towns which still conserve their Slav and Croatian origins and indeed the language and customs are still clearly evident. The local dialect is officially Stokavo of the Ikavo group. The people arrived here at the end of the 15th century to avoid the increasing Turkish dominance in their home country which was also expanding across the Balkans. The parish of S.Felice del Molise or 'Sti Filic' is dedicated to S.Maria of Constantinople and dates to the 16th century. Here you can find 15 small paintings depicting the mystery of the Rosario dating from the 17th century. Montemitro (Muntimitar) is built around the 14th century church of Saint Lucia. Nearby Acquaviva Collecroce (kruc) has a superb, baroque style church. Above the entrance there is an inscription in Latin remembering the battle of Lepanto in 1571, together with the cross of Malta. You can still buy Slav influenced handicrafts in the zone such as intricate lace. The cuisine is simple, e.g. lasagne al brodo, sausages (kabasice) and ham (prsut). At Guglionesi don’t forget the Brother Serafino led the local population in their defence of the city from the Turks, stopping the invaders and their leader Sulayman at the city walls.

The Molise shows oneself to right, for a short feature, on the Adriatic sea.Molise is bordered by the Abruzzo to the north-west, by the Lazio to the west, by the Campania to the south, by the Puglia to the south-east. Campobasso and Isernia are the main cities of the Region. In the Campobasso area, which is the capital of the Region, there are are 84 cities, in the Isernia area there are 52 cities. The shape of the territory is rectangular, for the 55,4% composed by mountains. This zone is formed by the Appennines and the higher mountains are Petroso Hill (2,247 meters) and Miletto Hill (2,050 meters).Mountains become as sweeter and continuous as you move to Abruzzo: higher tops, in fact, have a medium height of 1.000 - 1,500 meters. The Mouth of Forli, situated on the north, indicates the limit between the centre and the meridional Appennino and it is situated at 998 meters; near Vinchiaturo mountains comes down to 515 meters, just before joining the Molise with the Campania. The hills are amost nearly to the coast, which is low and lacking in ports. The rivers are little and short. The main ones are the Trigno (84 km.), the Fortore (86 km.), and the Volturno. The last one only slides in Molise for the main part, then it enter in Campania and there meet the sea. We must remember that the Biferno river comes down from the Matese and is an emissary of the Guardialfiera lake. Occhitto lake is an artificial one, generated by an obstruction on the Fortore. The typical wheather in Molise is continental inside becoming mild in proximity of the coast.Molise got some proctect areas as well: the region is indeed classified on a national level as protected areas. Protected areas are the National Park of Abruzzi, Lazio and Molise, Bosco Casale, Guardiaregia and the areas of Collemeluccio, Montedimezzo and Pesche.Main cultivations are those of the cereals, olives and the screw. The tourism in Molise is present in different ways: Mountain, with Campitello Matese and Capracotta, beach, with Termoli and Campomarino, archaeological, FOODIES

ISERNIA THE BELLS CAPITAL

See the Romanesque/Neoclassical cathedral built on the site of a pagan temple.Visit the remains of the Roman viaduct and the museum housed in the ex Monastery of Saint Mary of the Monks with fragments of Roman lapidae and the remains of Homo Aeserniensis dating from a million years ago. Also of note is the Fontana della Fraterna (a public fountain constructed between the 13th and 14th centuries) and the hermitage of Saints Cosma and Damiano. Read a brief history of Isernia here.AGNON. Visit the Papal Bell Foundry 'Marinelli' with its adjacent museum where you can trace the history of bell making over a thousand years. There are numerous churches and shops with articles worked in copper and iron.In deepest Molise you can find small but strangely named town called Capracotta. If you are looking for only reason to visit the lost corner of Italy, then do go so you can simply say "I went to a place called 'Cooked Goat'".It is a town with a surprisingly active tourist promotion relative to the rest of the region and the mascot, suitably enough, is a goat on skis.
